How to Install an Iomega Zip 100

There are two types of Iomega Zip 100 drive: external and internal. The external drive attaches to your computer through the printer parallel port or the USB port, while the internal drive is connected to the internal IDE or SCSI controller and inserted in an empty drive bay of your computer much like a CD or DVD drive. Installing either type of Iomega Zip 100 drive is simple.

Instructions

External Drive

1

Connect one end of the parallel or USB cable to the Zip drive. Attach the opposite end to your computer. If using the parallel port version, attach the power cord and plug it into an electrical outlet.

2

Wait to see if your operating system automatically recognizes the drive. Windows 98SE, ME, 2000 and XP should recognize the drive. If not, insert the installation CD into the CD drive.

3

Install the drivers by following the instructions onscreen.

4

Reboot if prompted. The drive is now ready to use.

IDE or SCSI Internal Drive

5

Make sure your computer is off and unplugged from its power source. Following the instructions in the user's manual, use the supplied screws and a small Phillips-head screwdriver to attach the supplied mounting rails to the drive.

6

Remove the cover from your computer and locate an empty drive bay. This may be above or below any existing CD or DVD drive or above or below the existing hard drive. Punch out the plastic insert that protects the drive bay on the front cover plate of the computer.

7

Slide the Zip drive into the empty bay and secure it with screws. Attach one end of the supplied ribbon cable to the Zip drive and the other to an empty IDE or SCSI controller slot on the computer motherboard. The manufacturer's label on the bottom of the drive will identify it as either an IDE or SCSI drive. If you do not have a CD, DVD or floppy drive in the computer, you can use the open end of the existing cable that is connected to your hard drive.

8

Replace the cover on your computer and connect the power supply. Turn the machine on and allow it to fully boot.

9

Install the software that comes with the Zip drive if your system does not automatically recognize the drive. If the computer does not have a CD or DVD drive, the software can be downloaded from Iomega.com.

Tips & Warnings

  • Iomega Zip 100 drives can only read Zip 100 disks. They cannot read the larger 250 and 750 megabyte disks.
  • If you know that your operating system does not support the Zip 100 drive, install the software before installing the drive itself.
